The safe way to the right gasket
Mounting instructions for KLINGER-gaskets
KLINGER-gaskets in Australia are asbestos free. The KLINGERsil qualities use, according to the types, different fibres as a substitute to asbestos. Based on this different composition the asbestos-free gaskets show a different behaviour on temperature load. Therefore in general, more care is necessary during the selection of the gasket type and during installation.
On principle the following mounting instructions for KLINGER-gasket material have to be taken in account
1. Selection of the gasket
A suitable type of gasket material can be selected according to the KLINGER literature– first of all, the chemical resistance and the pT diagram (refer also to KLINGER- expert the reliable route to successful sealing).
2. Gasket thickness as thin as possible and technically ingenious!
In general KLINGERsil gaskets have to be selected thinner in size than asbestos containing gaskets. As a rule of thumb 2/3 to 3/4 of the thickness of asbestos containing material can be used.
For example: 2 mm instead of 3 mm, or 1.5 mm instead of 2 mm. Graphite-gaskets shall have thickness-to-widths-ratio not lower
than 1/5.
3. Flanges should be parallel, metallically clean and dry, and the gasket has to be mounted centrically.
Please pay attention to the correct inner- and outer diameter, the gaskets should never tower into the throughhole!
4. The mounting of the gasket should be performed without any grease- or oil-containing separating media.
KLINGERsil gasket material is equipped with an anti-adhesion layer on principle. If there is an extreme demand on anti-adhesion effect we propose the use of dry-sprays on the basis of molybdenum disulphide or of Teflon, e.g. KLINGERflon Spray. The fuel gas and the solvent should be evaporated completely.
Absolutely no oil or greasecontaining products may be used, as they have a degregating influence on the safety of the complete flange connection.
Graphite-gaskets are to be mounted without grease, oil and other anti-adhesion material.
5. During installation the bolts must be tightened in several steps, equal and cross-wise.
The nuts should be greased if possible. Tightening should be performed until the max. bolt tension is reached (to get sufficient elongation and spring-like behaviour of the bolt).
Therefore a safe and durable sealing will be achieved, provided that the bolt quality and gasket material have been selected correctly (material and thickness).
6. "Re-tighten" is usually not necessary if a.m. references will be followed.
If re-tightening is necessary, this should be done under low temperature before or during the startup of the piping or the plant. Re-tightening under higher service temperatures can cause failure of the sealing connection and therefore should avoided. A gasket selected and mounted in the correct way and under consideration of the a.m. references will be durable and timely stable.
7."Multi-use" of a gasket.
To use a gasket more than one time can not be recommended.
